5 year stats...2 Months later.

We finally were able to get in to see Oliver's doctor for his five year check up. All weekend we had to prep him and talk to him about what the doctor was going to check and why AND that he had to get his shots. He was okay with all the check up information, but not the shots. We told him that it was important so that he could be ready for Kindergarten next year. That wasn't cutting it, so we proceeded to tell him that he needed to get shots so that he could hold the babies when they are born. He seemed more open to that idea, but was still pretty upset that he had to do it.

 

The morning of, I was worried that he was going to go kicking and screaming, but luckily he was super happy and excited about being at the doctors office. They checked his eyesight (which had me chuckling a little as he described the pictures on the eyesight board), they checked his whole body and then came the shots. Ever since he got his first shots as a new born, I have always gotten nervous and hot and sweaty right before they do it. I just hate seeing my boy in pain.. as weak of me as that sounds. The doctor told him to pretend to blow out a candle when they give him the shot and Oliver did just that. I held his hands and reminded him about the candles as they gave him 2 shots. The first one hurt him a little but he was so brave and didn't even cry. I was so proud of him for doing such a good job.  Later that night he was walking around with a limp and had a killer welt on his thigh. Thankfully the warn corn bag helped him feel better and he is doing just fine.

Oliver weighs 44lbs and measures 44 inches tall which puts him at about 60% for his age. He is growing great and developing right on track.



Sure do love this boy of mine. 

Halloween Make-Up

After seeing Oliver's make-up, my nephew, Spencer asked if I would be willing to do his make-up for his orchestra concert. Since I like Spencer, I said that I would.

I told him that it would take about an hour so he sat and watched Paranorman with Oliver while I messed up his face.

I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to do so I thought I would share what I know in case anyone needs/wants to look like a zombie or so that I can refer back to for next Halloween.

 

Face rot/holes/bites:

First step was to throw some oatmeal and toilet paper mixed with liquid latex on his face to make it look like his skin was coming apart. For the toilet paper, used torn edges. Apply a thin layer of LL (liquid Latex) and then the toilet paper followed by more LL. After that I put a full application of liquid latex all over his face even on areas that do not have rot. When this dries and as the person moves their face, it will create a wrinkled look and look awesome.

 

Foundation:

Next I used the hair dryer on his face so that It would be completely dry before adding any color. When it was all dry. I used a brush and put a generous amount of powder on his face. A brush works better in the lumpy areas so that it covers all the cracks a holes. I mixed some BB cream (that I wasn't going to use anymore) and some grey and white Halloween cream to create a dead looking color and applied that all over his face. It worked best to load up your sponge with color and dab it in the holes and cracks.

 

Shadowing:

Once I got the foundation, I was ready for some color. It worked best to use black eye make up rather than black Halloween paint for the eyes. I later learned (after Spencer's make-up) to get the inside corner of the eyes as dark as you can. Drawing black lines under where eye bags would be gave you more of a tired zombie look instead of just black cirlces around the eyes. I also did a layer of black on the temples, cheek bones (if they were exposed)  and around the mouth. I used black Halloween paint for that part.

 

Blood and color:

This was the fun part. I found that the best product to use for color was Wilton food coloring (in the wet paste form) mixed with corn syrup. I used real red, brown, light brown and black.  In the holes, I made sure to use black to really show the depth of the wound and lighten up around the edges with brown and light brown. There really is no wrong way of doing this part. After filling in all the holes, I ran around the edges with some red to really gore it up. Out of the large holes, I liked to get a combo of deep red and dark brown and make drips out of the wound. The nose was fun to black out to make it look like there wasn't much of a nose. This worked better on Spencer than Luke because I used some brown in his. 

 

Final touches:

I liked to use some of the red food coloring to dab on the lips to make it look like the zombie has been feeding. I also mixed some red and brown food coloring with some corn syrup and a little bit of water. I dipped the bristles in and vigorously shook the liquid around the face to make it look like blood splats. We also bought some tooth rot at walmart for about $2.00. Instead of using colored hair spray, we just used a lot of hair conditioner to give it a really oil-y look.  If you are brave enough you can shave chunks out of your hair. This worked well for Luke since he was just going to shave his head anyway. And don't forget the neck and ears. Those will be exposed too so make sure you rot them up.

On Halloween Day

Today for Halloween we got all dressed up in our zombie/zombie hunter best and headed out to Barton Creek to do a little trick or treating. Oliver was so sweet as he made his way through the all the elderly people collecting his candy. At every stop he would quietly say "trick-or-treat" and then follow that with a soft "Thank you".  There were a couple of residents that were shocked at Oliver's face and I don't think they liked the gore so much, but they still smiled and carried on.

Since grandma Wiggles wasn't feeling very good that day, she did not go down to pass out candy so we went up to visit her. I love this picture of them. Makes me laugh. 

 

Later that night after I got Luke ready, we headed up to Trent and Amy's. We usually throw our own Halloween party, but this year it sounded so much better to go to a party rather than host one.

Luke worked really hard on his costume and I think he did a pretty awesome job.

That night we had so much good food. The Jensen's know sure know how to make good snacks and the husbands took the kids trick-or-treating. It was such a fun low key night. Oliver was so excited with all the candy he got and that he had so many kids to play with.

Baker Halloween Pumpkin Carving Party Extravaganza

 Every year, my family gathers together for our pumpkin carving party at my moms house. If I remember correctly, I think this is our 5th year. We make some food, order some pizza and after everyone is done eating and cleaned up, we get those pumpkins on the table and start carving away.

We missed not having Kat there with his magical elaborate creations and we missed Phia and Kenzie not participating in the pumpkin carving.

 

When we got home, we lit up our pumpkins and were pretty happy with how they turned out.

Love this messy tradition and hope to keep it going for years to come. 

Ward Hallowen

First thing on our Halloween festivities this year was our ward Halloween Party. Oliver requested to be a zombie this year so, homemade zombie is what I went for. I found a couple tutorials online on how to make yourself look like a zombie and took off with it. After sitting for 45 minutes, Oliver was ready.

He loved how he looked and I think even got a little scared when he looked in the mirror for the first time.

 As I was taking pictures of Oliver in his costume, he got an excited look on his face and said "Mom, I have an idea." and he laid down next to the tomb stone so that I would take a picture of him.

The primary presidency was in charge of coming up with a game. We went the easy route and chose Halloween pictionary. Super easy and super fun.  

Luke was studying late that night for his FE exam but was able to meet up with us later on. We ate some delicious chili and desserts and overall had a great time with the ward family. 

Random of Randoms

I love having instagram, however sometimes I don't blog because of it, but it is nice to have to look back on for when I finally do blog. Here are some random things that we have been up to the past few weeks.

On September 20th, our neighbors hosted the 2nd annual outdoor movie night. This was so much fun last year and I am so glad they did it again this year. We watched Hotel Transylvania bundled up with sweaters and blankets.

 The food here does not disappoint. We have the best movie snacks anyone could ask for...and this was only one of three tables.

Oliver and I had our check up at the dentist. Luckily, he isn't scared to go so it makes for a nice trip. Neither of us had cavities and we both got our teeth cleaned which felt so good. 

Since Luke is in the Elders Quorum, he helps out a lot with moves and stuff. This particular day it was nice to just enjoy the company of the young families in the ward with a breakfast. 

Oliver finished up soccer and he was really happy about it. This was pretty much his team the entire season. Most of the time it was 3 or 4 on 6 which {i think} made Oliver hate soccer since his team never got to take a break and they were playing a lot more kids. He still rocked it though and played hard and we are so proud of him. His coach, Joe was so awesome and we were lucky to have him coaching Oliver. 

 Luke and I and our friend AJ are obsessed with the TV series Game of Thrones so naturally we had to throw a big season finale viewing complete with fine cheeses, meats, bread and drinks...served on crown plates and goblets of course. Yes, we are that nerdy.

 

 We headed down to St. George to watch Trent, Amy and Jake finish the marathon. The night before at the packet pick up, they had a kid run. Of course all the Jensen kids wanted to do it...my kid, not so much, but I tricked him into running it while I quickly walked next to him. He was so happy that he did it because he got a water bottle for a prize.

This was Amy's first marathon so we had to be there to support her.

 

 She did so awesome and inspired me to want to sign up to do one. She really is amazing.

 

When we got back from our St. George trip, we decided it was time to buy a car for our growing family. We had been looking for a while and Luke finally found the perfect one.

We had to trade in Luke's car which was actually a little sad. That car was purchased when Luke got off his mission, it was with us through our whole marriage, it got Luke through college, and even though it was a little beat up from me hitting a garbage can on the freeway and scratching the crap out of it with a metal snow shovel, it was a great car.

Oliver has started to read. Grandma Lily is awesome and has a great way of teaching her kids. I love watching the work he has done with her. What would we do without grandmas. 

 Since we got the new car, we decided it would be a good time to put Oliver into a traditional booster and we bought one of our baby car seats. This is getting real.

 I hosted a Nickel Auction. We had a great turnout and I even made 30 bucks off my stuff. It was awesome!

 

 We have hit up Lagoon a couple of times this Halloween season. It has been so fun to go there with Oliver. He loves it and I love Frightmares.

We got invited to a Halloween Roaring 20's party. I was so excited to go to an adult only party and Capson's did not disappoint. I wish I would have thought to take pictures because they went all out for this party. We laughed to tears and had such a great time. Luke and I won second place for best couple costume and I won first place for guessing how many bullets were in a jar. Seriously, such a great time!

 

And there is the random of random pictures and posts of our life in the past month. It's been busy and so much fun.

Pre-School Fieldtrip

Today I got to miss work to spend the day with Oliver at his pre-school class field trip. I loved going with him and playing with him. Oliver is the type to just play on his own and be okay with it so we would go from station to station and I would play with him or watch him play. At one point we went into this large playroom with huge foam blocks and built forts and towers to knock down. Best part was that it was just me and Oliver for a solid 45 minutes with no one else. It was so fun to just be there with him playing.

 

When we headed up to the second floor, Oliver insisted that we take the stairs. To me, that seemed like a mile of stairs and it probably took me about 10 minutes to haul myself up there.

 I love my little man and I am so happy that we got to spend the day together.
